講道的目的是要幫助會眾把經文中由上帝而來的生活原則，應用於其處境之中，使上帝的子民合乎上帝的旨意，使上帝得著榮耀；換句話說，是要將古代的經文應用於現代受眾的生活之中。這就是傳道人的使命—要將「當時當地」的經文，翻譯成為「此時此地」受眾聽得懂的語言，同時具有權威性和相關性。
